The CSU Announces Plans to Require COVID-19 Vaccines; Appointments Available Throughout SLO County
The CSU and UC systems announced plans to require the COVID-19 vaccine for students and employees conditioned on Food and Drug Administration approval and adequate availability of the fully approved vaccine, likely beginning fall quarter. Everyone 16 and older in SLO County is eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine and can find first and second dose appointments through several local providers. All students can make appointments at Campus Health and Wellbeing’s at the Health Center. Everyone can find appointments at local pharmacies and SLO County’s Public Health Department vaccine sites outlined on the of the coronavirus website. The county encourages everyone to follow instructions to make a second dose appointment, if needed, through the same provider that administered the first dose. The county urges the campus community to share their vaccine experience and become a to help end the pandemic.
Vaccine Fact Check: What's Happening with the Johnson & Johnson Vaccine?
Welcome to the COVID-19 Vaccine Fact Check, weekly insights on the COVID-19 vaccines presented by Campus Health and Wellbeing. This week’s fact check addresses recent news regarding the . Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended a pause in administering this specific brand of vaccine due to reports of a rare and severe type of blood clot. The issue occurred at a rate of 7 per 1 million vaccinated women between 18 and 49 years old within two weeks of getting the vaccine. For women 50 years and older and men of all ages, this adverse event is even more rare. During the pause, medical and scientific teams examined available data to assess the risk and conducted outreach to health care providers to ensure they knew how to recognize these cases and manage the unique treatment required. On April 23, the CDC recommended use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine should be resumed and confirmed the FDA and CDC have confidence that the vaccine is safe and effective in preventing COVID-19. Nominations for 35th Annual 鶹 Community Service Awards Due May 16
Nominations for the 35th annual 鶹 Community Service Awards are due by before midnight Sunday, May 16. Awards for the categories of individual faculty, staff and student contributions, along with student organizations and community partner of the year, will be bestowed on those making extraordinary impacts to address community needs. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, honorees will first be notified by email before awards and written recognition are delivered to them in lieu of a traditional in-person ceremony. Scout Coffee Co. Coming to Campus
Locally owned Scout Coffee Co. will be serving its made-from-scratch pastries and craft-roasted coffee in a new location next to the Welcome Center in yakʔitʸutʸu in fall 2021. Scout will offer its award-winning HoneyCo Coffee Roasters coffee as well as an extensive menu of fresh-baked goods, including buns, muffins and scones, almond blackberry jam croissants, ham and cheese croissants, multiple shortbread options and more. For those looking for a more substantial meal, Scout has numerous other optio(including avocado toast, fruit and yogurt parfait, chia pudding, Liege waffles, and a buttermilk biscuit with salted honey butter and jam. In addition to coffee, teas and tasty food items, Scout Coffee Co. is known for its inspiring spaces that locals have come to love. The new space will serve as a gathering spot for campus residents and visitors to grab a quick coffee and pastry on the way to class or to join a tour of the campus. 鶹 Corporation is funding the build out of the space, with total capital expected to exceed $1 million. Last Chance to Give Feedback and Win Prizes
This is the last week that campus community members can provide feedback to Administration and Finance units and be entered to win prizes for participating in the Focus Forward survey. The survey closes on Friday, April 30. A&F leadership is reaching out to constituents across campus for feedback on the division’s response to the pandemic. Safety Days Tips with EHS
Environmental Health and Safety will celebrate World Day for Safety and Health at Work on Wednesday, April 28, with a reminder to the campus community that it is always important to practice safe behaviors, whether you are working on campus or at home. Practicing safety at work is always necessary in order to avoid any injuries or health complications. World Day for Safety and Health at Work aims to raise awareness of safety and health in the work place. To commemorate the day EHS has put together a list of the Top 11 Safety Tips. They are:
- Keep work areas clean.
- Use the proper tool for the job.
- Always wear the proper PPE for the work task.
- Never work on live equipment.
- Make sure chemicals are properly labeled and stored.
- Stop work when needed to address hazards.
- Communicate hazards to other personnel.
- Wear your hair up and avoid loose clothing when operating any machinery.
- When operating a golf cart or bike follow traffic rules.
- Ask questions when you are unsure.
- Maintain an ergonomic workspace.

Do-It-Yourself Video Captioning Training Available to Campus Members
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) offers monthly DIY video captioning trainings via Zoom for faculty, staff and/or their student assistants. The next training will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 11. Attendees will learn how to use various automated transcription tools to create accurate closed captions for videos uploaded to YouTube. 鶹 to register for this training and to request accommodations as needed. Transfer Inclusivity Training to be Held May 14 and June 4
To help create a more inclusive and equitable environment for transfer students at 鶹, the Transfer Center is offering a Transfer Inclusivity Training to all staff and faculty on campus. Replacement Program for Off-Campus Fuel Purchases Coming Soon
The off-campus fuel program known as Voyager is being replaced, and current cards will expire June 30. Employees and departments with an off-campus fuel card must take immediate action to avoid any gap in service. Facilities Operations Executive Director Jude Fledderman is retiring on May 1. Hailing from a small town in Pennsylvania, Fledderman moved to California’s Central Coast in 1982 and spent 33 years in various positions at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant working for PG&E. He later joined 鶹, where he has led Facilities Operations for nearly six years. In this role Fledderman proudly guides a highly talented staff performing a variety of roles, including various skilled trades, custodial, landscape, fleet, moving and surplus, and other leadership and support personnel. Collectively they maintain, keep safe and clean, and constantly improve the campus facilities and environment. Fledderman says he will miss his daily interactions with staff and the walks around campus viewing their awesome work and accomplishments. Additionally he will miss receiving verbal and written thank you notes to the staff of the Facilities Operations Team from students, staff, faculty and campus visitors and sharing them with the team. Fledderman’s retirement bucket list includes traveling to North America cities, sightseeing and fly fishing, as well as performing some nonprofit work that involves helping people and preserving — two things he is passionate about. He is also looking forward to experiencing the freedom of not being on-call 24/7 for the first time in 30 years.

Slated for Wednesday, April 28, Denim Day is an international campaign that evolved after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the survivor . Statistical Consulting Service Available During Spring
The Statistics Department provides a statistical consulting service to the university community to facilitate research design and data analysis in a wide variety of disciplines. Consulting will be available through June 11 by appointment only. Ulric Lund and John Walker will serve as the consultants. They are available to advise on data collection, experimental design and analysis of research projects. In addition, they are available to lead seminars or tutorials on requested topics and offer advice on various computer packages available at 鶹. The Performing Arts Center invites you to celebrate International Jazz Day with the Arthur White Quartet, which will be live-streamed at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 30. This performance, part of the free virtual concert series, will feature 鶹 professor and saxophonist Arthur White, joined by vibraphonist Sean Collins, bassist Dylan Johnson, and drummer Darrell Voss. White is a nationally recognized composer, arranger, touring saxophonist and director of jazz studies at 鶹. ‘The Muse Hour’ Features Las Cafeteras on May 8
鶹 Arts’ virtual music and conversation series “The Muse Hour” welcomes Los Angeles-based Afro-Mexican music group Las Cafeteras at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 8. Born and raised east of the Los Angeles River, Las Cafeteras is remixing roots music and telling modern-day stories of Latino and immigrant lives. Using traditional Son Jarocho instruments like the jarana, requinto, quijada (donkey jawbone), and tarima (a wooden platform), Las Cafeteras sing in English, Spanish and Spanglish and meld styles from rock and hip-hop to rancheras. Produced in cooperation with Tacoma Arts Live in Washington and The Luther Burbank Center in Santa Rosa, California, this event includes a prerecorded performance, followed by a live virtual and moderated Q&A session with members of Las Cafeteras. ‘Rubí: A DACA Dreamer in Trump’s America’ Film Screening and Discussion Set for May 14
The campus community is invited to attend a film screening of “Rubí: A DACA Dreamer in Trump’s America” followed by conversation with executive producer Lázaro Lima, professor of Africana and Puerto Rican/Latino studies at Hunter College in New York. The webinar event will take place at noon Friday, May 14. The film is an intimate true-life portrait of 22-year-old Rubi, an undocumented Mexican-American Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Dreamer. In revealing interviews filmed over three years, Rubí and her parents (also undocumented) recount their family’s harrowing immigration story and detail why they came to the United States with their then-7-year-old daughter. The event is presented by the World Languages and Cultures Department; the College of Liberal Arts Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Fund; and the Ethnic Studies, History, and Social Sciences departments. .
